According to books about sexuality and marriage, most couples achieve a harmonious, mutually satisfying sexual relationship within a few months.
The reality, it appears, is different. Large numbers of couples fail to achieve a harmonious sexual relationship and others only achieve it for periods of time. The lack of harmony in the relationship may lead either of the couple to form an extramarital relationship, or it may lead to a sexual problem in one or other partner, in other words, a sexual dysfunction. This means that the person is unable to function sexually as well as he or she might.
In the past, it was believed that few women had extramarital sexual relationships, and few men had sexual dysfunctions. These beliefs are known to be incorrect.
