MENOPAUSE PROBLEMS: WEIGHT INCREASE

It is well known after forty that weight increase usually occurs, and you must just be more careful about what you eat. In fact there are those who say you must eat only half the amount of food you have previously eaten. There must be some metabolic reason for this. We also tend to exercise less as we get older. The body shape also alters during this period, which is a reverse process to the development that occurs at puberty. Oestrogen can help maintain your breast shape and exercise will do this too (see chapter 8).

Does oestrogen cause weight increase?

While oestrogen tends to hold on to the extra kilos say one or two, you cannot blame it for general obesity and overeating. The weight increase associated with oestrogen may be due to retention of fluid, which can be overcome to some extent by reducing the salt intake in your food, which is good for other symptoms in your body as well.
