Nursing homes and other institutions are rarely a choice, but in most cases a necessity. Unfortunately, many are entirely unsatisfactory and, like other institutions, tend to dehumanize the inmates. Many seem geared for the profit of the proprietor and the convenience of the staff rather than for the benefit of the inhabitants. In some, rigid rules control the conduct of the inmates, there is no privacy, and the person has no area he can call his own. In some, the ‘patients’ are kept in bed because it is easier, tidier, and less demanding on the time of the staff. In most, sexual segregation is demanded, and rules against sexuality are enforced although, as I have written earlier, sexuality in old age should be encouraged rather than denied. Changes are occurring slowly, but more are needed, and the voice of the old must be heard by apathetic politicians and unconcerned middle-aged and young people. The welfare of old people should matter to all of us, for we will be old one day.
